A shot of Prince Andrew playing a round of golf on The Old Course at St Andrews. This was just a case of being in the right place at the right time. I was at St Andrews on commission for The Associated Press in the build up to the 2000 Open Golf Championship shooting some preview pictures of the ground staff preparing the course.
I was just finishing up with some GV’s of the club house and fairways when a small group appeared on the first tee and started playing towards me. The course was closed at the time so it was strange that someone should be playing golf on it. The group was preceded by what turned out to be the Princes bodyguards who after a quick chat were happy with me taking pictures of The Royal party as they played their round. The Prince himself seemed amused by the coincidence of me being there for what was intended to be a private round of golf and was quite amiable despite having my camera pointed at his every shot. It was agreed that I’d leave them to their golf after getting enough shots. I needed to get away quickly to get the images wired anyway.
Strangely, The Associated Press desk wasn’t bothered with the pictures of The Prince at first and only wanted me to send the ground staff preparation pictures. They did change their mind later and asked for just one picture for foreign use which left me free to distribute the rest Nationally. I managed quite a few uses the following day in the Scottish Nationals. Sometimes lady luck is with you.
