Former football hardman turned actor Vinnie Jones and his co star Vas Blackwood pose for me at the Edinburgh Film Festival launch of the film Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels in 1998.
I’d been commissioned by The Scottish Sun but not until very late in the day. I was already on another job in The Scottish Borders and faced a long drive back to Edinburgh where the heavy Festival traffic awaited me. I was late arriving for the early evening press call which was being held in an empty office block just off Lothian Road. A strange location for a glitzy launch but this was after all Festival Season in the city and anything was possible.
I anticipated a grand affair with lots of press in attendance but was surprised to find it was a very low key event which no other press had deemed worthy of attending. I was welcomed with open arms by the assembled PR’s and stars who were looking very relieved that anyone had shown up. Questions ensued about what would I like to do for the photo. My mind was a blank. It was a very bland empty office with no props and my mind raced for an answer. The only thing that sprang to mind in view of the films subject matter was play fighting with fingers as guns, like all boys used to as kids. I was dubious to say the least about making such a suggestion to hardman Vinnie but thank goodness after a little micky taking they agreed. The resulting picture was used extensively in The Sun and several celebrity magazines.
