Vinnie Jones and Vas Blackwood in Edinburgh 1998 for the premier of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
I’d only been freelancing since 1997 and this was my first Festival season in Edinburgh. The Festival ensures a regular supply of celebrities for a few months and it threw up some strange and surreal shoots as well.
This particular one was a commission for The Sun and was an exclusive one to one with the stars and senior production crew. As usual it was last minute and I’d had the call whilst on another shoot in The Borders so had to make a mad dash back to the capital for the shoot. At that point I don’t even remember having the details of the shoot other than the location, in a deserted office block and a contact name. It took ages to locate the venue and I eventually stumbled in on the gathering a few floors up in the empty offices at night.
I was confronted by Vinnie and Vaz together with Dexter Fletcher and the crew and pr people who were rushing off elsewhere and so the shoot needed to be completed on the hoof. No chance to think or set up lighting. Four shots with straight flash, one of Vinnie on his own, one with the three stars, one of the whole group and this one which despite it’s corn and basic lighting I have to say I rather like.
Still shooting film then so back to the house to wet process, scan and wire.
