FLOWER-SHOW011FLOWER-SHOW011Flower Show, Crosskeys, College.
Flower shows, dog shows, bird shows, fetes, carnivals, we covered them all on the local weekly I started on, The News, part of The South Wales Argus Group in Newport.
The independent newspaper was the paper that most press photographers aspired to at the time with their striking and creative use of pictures. This picture was taken at that time when I tried to move away from the posed picture to a more reportage style of unposed pictures. Cartier Bresson was a hero as well and this picture attempts to replicate his style. circa 1987

I remember following this old lady as she made her way around the stalls. Every time I raised my camera to take a picture she stopped and smiled straight down the lens. Not what I was after. Eventually I caught her off guard and got the picture I was after as she paid for her goods. circa 1987

FETE014FETE014Jazz bands were every where in the valleys in the 1980's. Every fete or carnival would have one and competitions abounded. I think this was taken in Cwm, Ebbw Vale.© Roger Donovan, Media Photos

FETE015FETE015Another picture from a fete. It was a wet Saturday afternoon and I had been working my way through a list of weekend events to cover and found myself arriving after the event at this one in Cwmbran. Everyone was leaving as I made my way across the field to the ever diminishing stalls. This little girl was on her way home and made a simple but lovely picture. Circa 1987

The first newspaper I worked on from 1975 -1987 was The News, a weekly paper circulating in the Gwent Valleys. Fetes, carnivals and flower shows were bread and butter for the three staff photographers. Mainly producing grip and grin style images, we all tried to push the boundaries by being a little more creative in our approach to what were mundane events.

Here are a few pictures of mine that I've come across recently from that time and which I still like. We were shooting everything in black and white then and we processed and printed all our own pictures. It would be many years before newspapers printed full colour.
